Russell Mills Lecture Unit X

Before the lecture on Russell Millls, I chose to have a look at his work online through the use of google images and noticed a stark contrast to the imagery displayed and what I thought the lecture would be about to what the lecture was actually on, and the vast amount of different art medias and pratices he works in solely or with a collaborative team.  A key thing I noticed in the lecture is how as a artist and creative person Russell Mills is not scared of working in a wide range of very differnt media pratices from the likes of sculptour, sound and also illustration. His sculptour pieces were seemed to be the dominant theme in his lecture in addition to this the links to Kurt Schwitters and the war and how much of a inspiration the Dadaist was on his work. The instalation and three dimensional pieces even though they are not usually what I am instiantly drawn to, felt however very graphical and modern, from the use of the lighting and geometric angular forms. Russell Mills instalations were heavily based on the useage of set design for music venues and production which is something in future I would possibly like to explore, in the sense of creating a theatric quality to a music gig much to the likes of Alice Cooper or Marylin Manson in there stage shows.Mills stage sets reminded me of a three dimensional Kandinsky painting from the ways inwhich the light and geometric patterns moved with the music and how there was a very abstract nature to the work. It therefore made me look at my own creative pieces and evalute them to see is something could be done to create a three dimmensional piece that the audience can interact with, something that can be more emotive  and be apart of rather than just look at from the likes of a poster design, but however possibly get a more memorable experience from. However the most memorable piece in his lecture was his work for the band nine inch nails, and the steel work produced which encompasses the industrial nature of the band and however a sense of cleanness from the strict angualr forms of the lettering and surronding boxes, being made out of metal makes the imagery more unique and like a piece of art rather than had it just been photoshop, Cd cover design is something I have always been interested in doing in future and to see the wide range of materials that can be used and worked with rather than just digital devices , makes me want to look into that line of work in the future.
