Ben's part of the lecture was based on how to paginate a piece of design using in design software and also a guide to how to print. I felt that the print out clearly explains how to paginate a piece of work in a easy step by step guide, which is useful as I forget how to set the printing properly, so you wont waste money on printing the pieces wrong. This part of the lecture was not only useful for the unit x project, in which we are looking to a final outcome of a publication but also for future publication work and different ways of presenting my work.
Grahams part of the lecture was based on how to use newspaper club, which is a online service in which designers and students can use to print a publication on newspaper stock paper which makes the piece feel more stylized and personal as it is on newspaper stock which is more delicate than normal paper so it makes the piece more special. I had never before coming to MMU heard about newspaper club, so I left that learning about different methods of printing is something that I would possibly want to explore more and in addition to this exploring painting on different paper stocks to create different feelings and see how different printed colours can look on different coloured papers. After explaining how to use the newspaper club website and apply your work to the site so that it follows in the order that you want. Graham Jones then went on to explain how he initially sets about planing the order of his work and the different choices that he takes to make a booklet or zine flow from page to page. One of the most memorable parts of the lecture was the way in which he uses colour coded systems to initially layout what order the pieces or written work will go in from combining them in separate groups. This is however can be subject to change from how you feel when looking at the work once it is completed, which I feel I would be most comfortable doing it by using both print outs and looking online digitally at the work .When doing the publication it was also useful to remember that in order for the piece to work it has to be a multiple of four, in addition to this you also have to consider a front cover, back front cover, back cover, back inside cover, and possibly a contents page and index/glossary page. After this a useful point Graham noted was when designing a publication, was to work with the largest body of text first so that the grid system when doing the work wont be needed to change half way through when you realize that on one of the pages there is too much text on the page, in which the whole of the publication has to be changed. When designing the work it was also noted on how to keep a theme running through the piece, from the use of the type and colour or furniture on the page, this creates a cohesion on the page. Which is also useful when working with clients as it makes the clients feel that they have a equal part in the book, this is also noted the amount of pages can have the same effect. Finally the way in which the piece is printed can effect the layout of the piece, for example by using a ring binder it will disturb some of the image and may go through someones head if it is not laid out properly.
